Translation Assignment

For this, we were tasked with translating our Language and Literacy Narrative essays into other forms of media, whether it be a poem, video, or presentation. I decided to do a Google Slides adaptation of my narrative essay that I then presented. Below is my outline and some screencaps of some of the slides:

Slide 1 – Title Slide

Title: How My Childhood Shaped My Language & Literacy

Speaker Notes:

Hey everyone! Today I’ll be sharing how my childhood shaped the way I read, write, and communicate. Basically, how the things I grew up with affected my idea of ‘language and literacy.’

Slide 2 – The Big Idea

On Slide:

• Childhood experiences shape who we become.

• Even small moments can leave big impacts.

• Language & literacy are part of that.

Speaker Notes:

Childhood is one of the most important stages in shaping who we are. Everything we experience when we’re young, especially things like what we watch, read, or listen to, helps build the foundation for how we speak and think today.

Slide 3 – My Early Influences

On Slide:

• Huge imagination

• Loved fiction & cartoons

Speaker Notes:

As a kid, I was super into anything creative or fictional. Marvel movies were coming out, and I loved Spider-Man. I also read a lot of fun books like Goosebumps and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Those stories really helped me build my vocabulary and imagination.

Slide 4 – The Spanish Thing

On Slide:

• Hispanic background

• Didn’t learn Spanish as a kid

• Focused more on English instead

Speaker Notes:

Even though I’m Hispanic, I actually never learned Spanish growing up. My grandparents tried to teach me, but I just didn’t have any interest back then. Looking back, I think not learning Spanish made me focus more on English and sharpen those skills, but now I kinda wish I’d learned both.

Slide 5 – My 4th Grade Shark Essay

On Slide:

• First “big” writing project

• My topic: Sharks!

In fourth grade, we had to write a big essay, and I chose to write about sharks simply because I was able to. It was my first time really writing an essay like that largely on my own, and I remember being super into it, playfully flowing through the essay

Slide 6 – The Moment

On Slide:

• Teacher read my essay

• Praised it to the whole class

• Everyone clapped

Speaker Notes:

When my teacher read my essay, she actually praised it in front of the class and had everyone clap for me. I was very proud! That moment really boosted my confidence in writing and is something I still remember fondly.

Slide 7 – What I Learned

On Slide:

• That moment built my confidence

• Showed me I could write well

• Helped me appreciate my foundation in Language and Literacy

That small moment in fourth grade stuck with me. It made me realize I was actually good at expressing myself through writing, and that gave me a lot more confidence in writing and my understanding of the English language.

• Every person’s language journey is unique
